Frequently Asked Questions

What is Eugene Secure Storage (ESS)?

Our office is a multi-functional branch of Umbrella Properties, providing a variety of services from one location. We are a storage facility – Eugene Secure Storage – providing both indoor storage and outdoor vehicle, boat, and RV storage. We are a carpet cleaning company – Signature Carpet Cleaning – providing service to businesses and private customers, as well as servicing the more than 2,500 apartments managed by Umbrella Properties. The balance of the FAQ deals only with ESS.

Does ESS rent by the Day, Week, Month, or Year?

We offer month-to-month leases, meaning no long-term contracts and no commitment. We do offer some special discounts if you are staying six months or more. We do not pro-rate months or offer refunds for unused time.

When can I get to my belongings?

Our gate access hours are from 6 am to 8 pm, 365 days per year. Our office hours are Monday – Friday: 9 am – 5:30 pm and Saturday: 9 am – 1 pm.

How much notice do I need to give to move out?

Our rental agreement says 30 days written notice. However, people are rarely able to give that clear of a time frame, so generally if you have moved your items out, swept your unit, and removed your lock, we can accept even a same-day notice if the office is open.

Do you offer help moving or unloading?

No. However, we can refer you to MovingHelp.com – a U-Haul affiliate, Bekins Cross Town Movers, or
We-haulstudentmovers.com. Other than the fact that we are a U-Haul franchise we can not offer any recommendations on the prices or services of these firms.

How can I make a payment?

When you sign a rental agreement with ESS you can opt to pay by cash, check, money order or credit card (Visa, Mastercard or American Express). If you pay by credit card you can opt for “auto-pay” where we will automatically charge your card each month when due, avoiding all possibility of late charges, or simply call in your request to charge your card at your convenience. Many people also set up auto-pay services through their own banks. We have a drop slot for payments after office hours, but we do not recommend this for cash payments.

What sizes do you have and how much do they cost?

We have a wide variety of unit sizes to meet your needs. However, availability varies constantly so call us at (541) 344-2710 for available sizes and prices.

Are your units climate controlled?

Unlike many other storage facilities, our units are built out of brick and plywood with insulated attics just like a home. Temperature variations are much smaller than with a steel building. Although originally built with all heated units, only one building remains that has both heating and air conditioning, at premium rates because demand is so low for that service.

How do I calculate how much storage space to rent?

For storage units we recommend you stop by and take a look at the various sizes. We are happy to offer some visual guides and expert advice. If you remember that you are generally packing floor-to-ceiling you will find small spaces hold a lot of items. All of our units are 8’ high and are quoted in even-foot sizes like 10′ x 10′. In reality, because walls take up some space, most units are about 4 inches smaller than the listed sizes.

Do you sell Locks?

Yes! They are available for sell at the office.

What kind of vehicle storage does ESS have?

We have outdoor gravel lot storage spaces ranging from 12’x20′ to 12’x60′ at prices ranging from $35 to $100 per month. Some people want to store vehicles INSIDE a storage unit and we will allow that in our 10’x20′ or 10’x24′ units at higher prices. We also store boats, trailers, RVs, construction equipment, and shipping containers. Any vehicle stored on our lot must be driven, not towed on to the lot, and must have proof of ownership with a document containing a VIN.

Do you provide Security?

Our grounds are protected by high-definition security cameras recording 24/7 and are surrounded by chain link fences topped with barbed wire and faced with high-strength overlay fencing. We also have security personnel who do drive arounds at night. Access in and out of the property requires code access. We do our best to protect you. However, no facility can guarantee perfect security all the time.

Do you insure our property?

No. You are self-insured. Generally, either Home Owners or Apartment Renters insurance will cover a portion of off-site property storage. Check with your insurance agent to verify coverage or availability of an inexpensive rider. We can give you information for MiniCo, a nationwide storage unit insurance provider if you wish.
